In 1978, when Xavier Roberts launched his "Little People" dolls, he could have never imagined how successful they'd become. Originally sold at craft shows, his dolls, which would later become known as "Cabbage Patch Kids," were made entirely of cloth and probably looked nothing like what they are today.

With a name change and the magic of a huge manufacturer, Cabbage Patch Kids took off in 1982. Since then, the brand's popularity has risen and then decreased. But recently, there has been a surge of interest in the toys. As reported on CNN's The Marquee Blog, the rights to Cabbage Patch Kids have been "purchased from creator Xavier Roberts' company, Original Appalachian Artworks, by Galen Walker - the producer behind the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' movie."
According to The Marquee Blog's sources, a TV special, "similar to a highly-rated program that aired during the 1985 holiday season," is now in the works for the old fad. However, according to a Washington Post blog on the topic, there is some skepticism about whether or not the TV special would interest today's kids.
Indeed, children today who are used to playing on computers, watching fast-paced television programs, and downloading all sorts of apps onto their custom iPod case-protected Apple products may not find the old cartoon intriguing. Do you know any children to which this supposed TV special might appeal? This will certainly be a true test of an 80s fad's staying power!
