Under the category of movies that surprised me falls Thor. I'm typically drawn to the Marvel-super-hero-type movies, but for some reason this one was not all that appealing. I was dragged to the theater by my friends - and by dragged I mean coerced with the promise of free popcorn and candy - to see Thor this summer.
Not actually having read any of the comic books, I still have enjoyed all of the previous Marvel films: The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man (and Iron Man 2), and all of the X-Men movies. Since then I've seen Captain America and enjoyed that as well. I'm also super excited for The Avengers in 2012! But getting back to Thor... The common theme in all of the Marvel movies I saw and liked was that mostly average people were heroes. The Hulk was a scientist, Iron Man a ridiculously smart privileged inventor and CEO, Captain America a regular (and somewhat scrawny) soldier and X-Men, well, they are not quite average but still human no matter how far along in evolution. But Thor - he is from a different planet! I don't know why, but that just did not sit well with me.

So like I said, "dragged" to the theater, I saw Thor... and much to my surprise... I loved it! I had too quickly judged it as a story of science fiction when really it is a story of human transformation. With interesting twists and bends, and an understated love story (as is common amongst the Marvel movies), I thoroughly enjoyed it. So why am I writing about Thor now if the movie came out back in May? Because it was just released on DVD and blu-ray! ...with a whole lot of extras apparently.

I haven't made it over to stores quite yet, but you can be sure I will by the end of this weekend. Call me a junky if you will - I really think my movie-addition has gotten worse lately. Others on my list include Captain America, Green Lantern, Harry Potter (box set), and Rise of the Planet of the Apes when they surface in stores. I may have a problem...
