So I set out to write a blog about a television show that I watched the other day, and before I began writing I happened to notice a comment left by Sarah on my last blog. Obviously, we all know by now that I am a ‘LOST’ addict, but unfortunately it can’t be on my television 24 hours a day, so one of the channels that I frequent is the food network. I see it as informative and instructional programming and I love to cook. But food network isn’t all about learning to cook, they also have shows that are reality-based about chefs and their restaurants or businesses. The one in particular that I’m talking about and intended to blog about ironically enough, is ‘Ace of Cakes’. I have wanted to blog about this ever since I watched the most recent episode this past weekend, but unbeknownst to me, Sarah had already made a comment about that show and shockingly a tie in to ‘LOST’. She is referring to the icing design that I drew on the brownie cake that we brought in to celebrate our manager Khurram’s birthday.
But I was actually going to talk about Ace of Cakes and how it pertains to LOST for an entirely different reason. Recently LOST celebrated their 100th episode and they decided to have the crew at Charm City Cakes create an elaborate cake to commemorate the occasion. The cake had pretty much everything you would expect it to have if you have ever seen the show before. With a few bells and whistles that they added such as, the LOST logo illuminated from underneath the tropical blue sugar mixture that looked like the water surrounding the island. They made small figurines of each character and one of the coolest things of all, was the 4-pack of Dharma Initiative beer.
I loved this part of the cake, not because it’s a 4-pack of beer, but because of the method they used to create such intricate detail on a cake. It’s a method that is near and dear to all of us in the promotional products industry; Screen Printing! Below is a Motivators TV video describing the screen printing process.

The cake was not done with machinery as seen in the video, but aside from being hand-screened, the process was exactly the same. They just laid the fondant flat and screen printed it before eventually wrapping it around their beer can shaped cakes. It was pretty cool to see a process so common in the promotional products industry being used in cake decorating.
