Ok, I get the whole creative license thing. Writers have the authority to do and say what they please. They're the ones telling their stories and they choose how to tell them and I'm fine with. What I'm not fine with is being left completely confused, bewildered, and agitated at the end of...wait for it...A SITCOM. And if you haven't seen this past week's How I Met Your Mother, just stop reading because this one is spoiler heavy.
But there is one catch...there's NOTHING to spoil! Consider this a joint rant between Adam and myself. If I could put us both on as co-authors I would, but since I can't its just me. On to the shenanigans...
Two episodes ago, we left our beloved hero Ted on a streetcorner, holding a yellow umbrella, which as any HIMYM fan knows is an absolutely integral part of the story. As soon as that episode started, and Ted grabbed that umbrella (stopping to throw in an Adam comment: custom imprinted umbrellas would be a genius promotion for the show), we knew something was in store. And as the suspension built and Ted took us through the entire episode leading up to that intense moment on said street corner when we saw Stella!
Now being the spoiler junkie that I am, I know that Stella is, to quote another classic TV show Dinosaurs "Not the mama!" But apparently that day...and Ted seeing her THAT day...and Ted being on THAT streetcorner THAT day holding THAT umbrella at THAT moment was absolutely integral to the story. And after this past weeks episode, I just have one question: WHY?
I feel like I'm watching Lost because we just saw an episode that had absolutely no reveal to anything relevant and it barely made any sense. *cue the IT department stoning me for insulting their favorite show.* Ted didn't meet anyone else in this episode (unless, as Adam suggested it, the mom is the cop who arrested Barney). Tony didn't give Ted a job. Stella didn't serve a purpose except to say "She's on her way," in regards to his soul mate. Are we crossing into Medium/Ghost Whisperer territory here? Are the fans supposed to just sit on the edge of their seats and see what Stella meant by that, and just assume she's clairvoyant now? Unless....Stella ends up being the one to introduce Ted to the mother. (idea that just popped into my head)
I can accept it, if there's a really funny story coming out of this. But there was no funny story, this episode was barely even funny at all. NPH excluded of course, because I just love him. But seriously HIMYM, I'm not happy.
Sidenote: also NOT HAPPY with NCIS. Must we give McGee a girlfriend that's not Abby? Perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions, but considering the fact that I read that this Julia person is becoming a recurring character next season, I'm slightly annoyed at the prospect. I think I'd be ok with this if I liked the actress, but I don't. Kudos to the writers for the conversation in which Abby openly questioned the prospect of scratching Yates' eyes out because that was hilarious. But boo to the writers for Abby pretty much giving McGee the green light by telling him that this ICE chick is not out of his league, which btw...she's not, but he's TOTALLY out of her league. If there's ever a love scene between these two I think I may gavomit (scrubs shout out!) Sigh. And I really need to stop spoiling myself so heavily since the season finale is absolutely predictable right now...sigh.
Alright, overly long TV rant over. Back to the exciting world of promotional products.
