...is tonight! In my previous post and all of my complaining about nothing being on TV, I completely forgot that football season is starting! The first regular season NFL game of 2011 is tonight (Thursday, 9/8) at 8:30pm EST between New Orleans and Green Bay. I'm secretly a huge fan of football, though real fans might not agree with that statement. I don't consider myself to be a "real" (though huge) fan because I'm only a fan in the sense that I love to watch the game, scream at the TV and eat junk food. I don't actually know the players names or who the coach is; in fact, most of the time I don't even care who's playing as long as I have a team to root for. And it's not like I'm loyal - I'll root for just about any team that isn't playing against my "home" teams.
I went to college in upstate New York and was constantly criticized for calling it "upstate" by the native Western New Yorkers. Being just an hour from Buffalo, I decided it was a good idea to root for the Bills. Now that I've moved "down state," I feel it only right to follow in my family's footsteps and root for the Giants. Most of the time, this won't be a problem for me... remember how I said I'm not loyal... but when they play against each other I'm afraid I'll have a real decision to make. I still have a bit of a soft spot for the Bills in all their underdogness (as a blogger, I now have the right to make up words!), but my grandfather always cheered for the Giants and some things are just sacred. I'm telling you: it's quite a pickle.
With the season upon us, I bet I'll be seeing all kinds of football promotional items from magnets and key chains to stress balls and pillows. At least I won't have to worry about feeling torn between my two favorite teams for another few weeks. For now I can just root for both of them... and make sure to do all my grocery shopping and errands on Saturdays so that my Sundays are free!
