You know you're watching a good show when you find yourself liking characters that for all intents and purposes you should really want to shove face first into a tank that houses a venomous fish.
That's right kids. Something funny happened on the way to the forum. The most feared episode of Bones…the one where our two favorite star crossed lovers "move on" and enter the dating pool has actually made its into my top ten list of best Bones episodes
At this point, I'm really not sure what to do with myself, except ask Hart Hanson if he would graciously give me back my body since aliens have seemingly taken it over. First, I'm astounded at myself for encouraging others to stay spoiler free for the 100th episode and now I'm openly stating that I'm more than okay with an episode where B&B go on and date other people? Who am I and what have I done with Sarah?
When I first read spoilers (back when I was still desperate to get my hands on them) that Rena Sofer was going to be cast as Booth's love interest, I made some not-so-lady-like comments. After all, I've seen what Sofer's character M. Allison Hart has been up to on NCIS and I was not impressed. I uttered words that a lady should never utter and I battened down the hatches to brace myself for the storm. Of course, this was all prior to the 100th episode so I had no idea that something as monumental as Booth laying his heart on the line would be a precursor to this "moving on" business. Once I saw that, the growing unrest seemed to increase exponentially. What in the h-e-double hockey sticks were the writers up to? Booth and Brennan are meant to be together.
You can't put them with other people…that's not how it works. I mean, look at Friends. Did anyone ever really like Emily, that British twit that Ross married (even though he said Rachel's name) And did anyone ever really like….oh for Pete's sake I can't even remember the names of any guy that Rachel ever dated because the entire show screamed Ross and Rachel. Just like Bones screams Booth and Brennan.
So for the past few weeks I've watched as fans of the show have openly expressed a general hatred for the character Dr. Catherine Bryar. Images of dead goldfish became Twibbons on Twitter and tweets were being tagged with a #fishfail hashtag. There was even a hilariously funny open letter to Dr. Catherine Bryar written by fans regarding the appropriate course of action and subsequent consequences in regards to Seeley Booth. And I was fine with it. I likened myself to Hodgins in Season 4…I had a coping mechanism of hate. And like Sweets said: "I'm good with the hate."
But like I said, you know you're watching a good show when you find yourself liking a character that you should want to get poked in the eye by a poisonous fish. Because that's exactly what happened. I didn't mind her, but more importantly I didn't hate her. And towards the end of the episode, I kinda liked her.
It's at this point that I'm glad this is a computer and you all don't know where I live lest I be pelted with dead goldfish, as I'm tagged a Booth/Brennan traitor. Let me clarify. They're totally soul mates and they belong together. I'm still 100% behind that pairing. But there's got to be some general upheaval. After all, what's life without upheaval?
It's boring.
And before anyone starts with the amount of wonderful storylines that the writers could do if they would just put Booth and Brennan together, and how it wouldn't be like Moonlighting and the show wouldn't jump the shark, I'm going to stop you and say this: I agree. As fans of Bones we've seen the extremely talented creative team that runs this show and we know for a fact that when Brennan and Booth do finally get together, it's going to be amazing. It's not going to be dull or boring. It's going to be absolutely mind-blowingly fantastic. How can I possibly say this?
Simply because it's that same creative team that took the idea of Booth and Brennan dating other people, an idea that made many people throw up a little in their mouths and they executed it in a way that didn't leave me shouting four letter words at my TV. And as anyone who's watched TV with me knows, that's a hard feat to accomplish especially when I've got a predetermined amount of hate set aside for a certain character.
We weren't overly bombarded with B&B trying to out do each other. The idea of them dating other people wasn't forced down our throats and the while we may have not exactly been eased into the situation (think dropping a kid in the water with floaties) it was still done with humor and sweetness. I mean, look at Hacker. He is a doofus, but he's a cute doofus! And his general social awkwardness fits in line with Brennan. Is it unbelievable that he is the Assistant Director of the FBI? Maybe a little, but it works.
As far as "catfish" as she's been deemed by fans was concerned, she fit well with Booth. She was aggressive but not to the point where it was obnoxious. And lest we all forget, we owe her some thanks. For as much as we love seeing Booth charm smile at Bones, you can all admit that no one can pull off some light hearted yet sexy flirting like DB. Seriously, try and argue THAT point. I dare you.
I think, however that the real deal breaker in this episode were Booth and Brennan's reactions to the situations that they'd gotten themselves into. Did anyone's heart NOT melt when Booth looked at Brennan and shyly said, "Bones, you are the standard." And come on, we all saw how distraught Brennan was when Booth discussed his date with a smile. "You deserve a good woman," Brennan said quietly and the audience believed that for as much as Brennan herself wanted to mean the words that were coming out of her mouth, she didn't. Let's not forget that the very first reason she seemed happy that the case was over was so that Booth could hook up with Bryar. And once again, in a brilliant portrayal by Emily Deschanel, we see that Brennan isn't as okay with everything as she seemed to be, in theory. She's already having a tough time compartmentalizing this one and we, as viewers can feel her pain.
