It's been one episode and already I think that Once Upon a Time is going to be my new favorite show. It may even outshine Grey's Anatomy, but we shall see. I really hope it lasts for more than one season so that the writers have a chance to shine. The whole concept is quite interesting, and the acting is great too (which seems like a no-brainer but unfortunately isn't always the case with TV dramas).
The only thing I worry about is that the writers will either run out of storylines or that they will dig themselves so deep into it and then have to get out quickly; I'm afraid that it will all be a dream or some other cop-out like they've all been dead this whole time (cough, Lost, cough). Perhaps it would make a better mini-series or even movie. That being said, however, I'm still extremely interested in seeing how it does pan out as a series. And, hey, it was just one episode - I'm totally prepared to give it a fighting chance!
An interesting fact I didn't know until recently is that ABC is actually owned by Disney, which is why Once Upon a Time can use Disney characters. Of course there are going to be other fairytale and storybook creatures in the show, but at least they don't have to worry about rights to characters developed by Disney. Interesting, right?
Taking a slight tangent... I just saw a commercial the other day for another show that has to do with fairytale characters: Grimm on NBC. The show is about a homicide detective that discovers he is actually descended from a line of criminal profilers known as "Grimms" who keep the balance between humans and Grimm fairytale creatures. It seems to me like a cross between Once Upon a Time and Charmed (a long-expired show I used to love about witches who protected innocent people and fought demons). Could be good. I'll just have to add it to the DVR and give it a shot.
Getting back to my point. I'm sure this is not the last you will hear from me about Once Upon a Time. I truly enjoy the Lost writers' writing. And it was even a little funny to hear a similar (or maybe even exactly the same) sound at a commercial break that was used in Lost. Already I can't wait for the next episode to air to see how the story unfolds. Are they going to give the back-story to all of the fairytales? The main character, Emma Swan, has decided to stay in Storybrook for one week - will the entire season/series/whatever take place in the course of that one week because of flash-backs and back-stories? I'm half-wishing that I let the show sit in my DVR until it got closer to Sunday so I wouldn't have to wait so long between episodes!
